ROUTE 25. FROM SENDAI TO YAMAGATA AND YONEZAWA. Itinerary. SENDAI to:— Ayako, 3 ri, 7¼ m.; Sakunami, 4 ri, 9¾ m.; Sekiyama, 5 ri 34 chō, 14½ m.; Tendō, 3 ri 26 chō, 9 m.; YAMAGATA, 3 ri 8 chō, 7¾ m.; Kaminoyama, 3 ri 18 chō, 8½ m.; Nakayama, 1 ri 33 chō, 4¾ m.; Akayu, 2 ri 24 chō, 6½ m.; YONEZAWA, 4 ri 4 chō, 10 m. Total, 32 ri 3 chō, 78½ m. This route is two easy days' journey by jinrikisha, staying the first night at Yamagata. Sendai and Yamagata are also connected by a more direct but rougher road over the Futakuchi-tōge. Sakunami (Inn by Iwamatsu), situated in a deep valley with precipitous sides, is noted for its hot-springs.

The main road from Akita to Yamagata is joined at the town of Tendō, where it emerges on to a plain which narrows towards Yamagata. The views hereabouts are very pleasing. The most striking object in the landscape is the summit of Gwassan, which rises behind picturesque lesser ranges, and whose slopes continue, even during the hottest part of the year, to be covered with large patches of snow. Yamagata (Inn, Gotō; foreign restt., Shizan-rō), capital of the prefecture of the same name, and formerly the castle-town of Mizuno Izumi-no-Kami, is well-situated on a slight eminence, and possesses broad and clean streets with good shops.

秋田から山形へ向かう本道は天童の町で合流し、そこで山形へ向けて狭まっていく平野に出る。このあたりの眺めはたいへん快い。景観の中で最も目立つのは月山の頂で、絵のような低い山並みの背後にそびえ、真夏でも斜面に大きな雪渓を残す。山形（宿は後藤。洋食休憩所は紫山楼）は同名県の県庁所在地で、かつて水野和泉守の城下町であった。少し高い場所に立地がよく、広く清潔な通りと良い店を備えている。
Leaving the highly cultivated plain of Yamagata, we enter some low hills, on the slope of one of which stands Kaminoyama (Inn, Kame-ya). This town contains several good inns, many of which are built high up the slope of the hill. It also possesses hot mineral baths, which, on account of their efficacy in rheumatism, attract visitors from considerable distances. Kaminoyama is noted as being one of the driest places in Japan, and may be recommended as a health resort. There are plenty of walks in the neighbourhood, and picturesque excursions can be made in many directions.
