ROUTE 65. FROM HAKODATE TO ESASHI. Itinerary. Hakodate to: Kameda, 1 ri (2 1/2 m.); Ono, about 4 ri (9 m.); Uzura, 10 ri (24 1/2 m.); Gamushi, 2 ri 15 chō; Esashi, 3 ri (about 7 1/4 m.); total, about 20 ri (48 m.). The above distances are approximate. Starting from Hakodate and passing through Kameda on the road to Nanae, the traveller turns off to the l. along a new road to Ono (Inns, Kakudai, Shinagawa). At the end of the village the road turns abruptly off to the l., and gradually ascends for a distance of 4 ri till the top of the pass is gained.

第65路程 函館から江差へ。行程距離は概算で、函館から亀田1里（2 1/2マイル）、大野約4里（9マイル）、鶉10里（24 1/2マイル）、俄虫2里15町、江差3里（約7 1/4マイル）、合計約20里（48マイル）。函館を出て七飯へ向かう道で亀田を通り、左へ折れて新道を大野へ進む。宿は角大、品川。村の端で道は急に左へ曲がり、峠の頂まで4里ほどゆるやかに上る。
From the summit a good view of Tengu-take, marked by three fir-trees, is obtained, and the ride to the village of Uzura is one of the prettiest in Yezo. The road winds in and out between steep cliffs above a foaming river, while the bold rocks and mountains recall the scenery of British Columbia. At Uzura, poor accommodation is provided at the house of Nagao Jūtarō, but it is better to push on to Esashi. [From Uzura a path diverges to the l. across a river to the village of Tate, 2 3/4 ri distant, once the residence of the Daimyō of Matsumae. The castle was destroyed in the rebellion of 1868, but portions of the walls can still be traced.

頂上からは、三本のモミで目印にされる天狗岳のよい眺めが得られ、鶉村までの騎行は蝦夷でも最も美しいものの一つである。道は泡立つ川の上の険しい崖のあいだを曲がりながら進み、荒々しい岩と山の景色はブリティッシュ・コロンビアを思わせる。鶉では長尾重太郎の家で粗末な宿泊はできるが、江差まで進むほうがよい。［鶉からは、左手へ川を渡る小道が分かれ、2 3/4里離れた館村へ通じる。そこはかつて松前藩主の居所であった。城は1868年の反乱で破壊されたが、石垣の一部は今もたどることができる。
The land in this district is among the most fertile in Yezo.] Gamushi (Inn, Oyama Tasaku). Esashi (Inns, Yamabuki Seizō, Kakui) is an old-fashioned town of 14,000 inhabitants, with a harbour unfortunately too much exposed. Fine views can be obtained from the high cliffs behind a Buddhist temple. Esashi boasts a lighthouse, a hospital, and a telegraph and other government offices. Roads are in course of construction from this place northwards to Shioji and southwards to Fukuyama.

この地方の土地は蝦夷でも屈指の肥沃さである。］俄虫（宿はオヤマ・タサク）。江差（宿は山吹清蔵、角井）は人口1万4,000の古風な町で、港は残念ながら風波にさらされすぎている。仏寺の背後の高い崖からよい眺めが得られる。江差には灯台、病院、電信局その他の官公署がある。この地から北のシオジ方面、南の福山方面へ道路が建設中である。
